No. 4 - Franz Michael Felder

As an author and social reformer, Franz Michael Felder was one of the most significant personalities in the history of Bregenzerwald. This room looking out on the church tower was renovated in 2017 and contains objects which commemorate Felder.

No. 5 - Hans Moser

In room No. 5, you will be able to explore the life- and creative story of Austrian actor Hans Moser, born "Johann Julier". Once also a guest of the Hirschen, he is deeply anchored in the DNA of the Austrian film industry.

No. 6 - Josef Anton Fetz

Art room No. 6 is a short journey back in time through the paternal line of Franz Fetz’s family. This room is dedicated to the dauntless Josef Anton Fetz (1834 to 1875), the great grandfather of our current owner. Of him it is said that he traveled the length and breadth of Europe for months at a time, both as a hunter and merchant. The picture “Commemorative photograph of a Russia trip” from 1979 was taken by Franz Metzler, the uncle of Franz Fetz.

No. 7 - King Max
König Max Suite

Our biggest suite in the house is dedicated to Bavaria’s King Max, who traveled through the Bregenzerwald in 1858 and lodged at the Hirschen with his retinue. The Baroque ceiling painting in the King Max Suite was done by Bezau artist Gabriel Ignaz Thumb in ca. 1780. It was in this same room that the subsequent owner of the Hirschen, Franz Fetz, was born in 1946. An apt location indeed, if you consider his family tree. He is a direct descendent of the Bregenzerwald Landammänner.

No. 11 - Dieter Weidmann

Artist Dieter Weidmann was born in Riedlingen in 1955, though didn’t discover painting until relatively late in life. His depictions of women, referencing fashion photography in the style of the 1940s and 50s, never fail to enchant the residents of room No. 11.

No. 12 - Angelika Kauffmann

Angelika Kauffmann is the most famous “daughter” of this town by far – even though she was not actually born in Schwarzenberg. Her time in this community left a lasting impression on her and, to this day, her art adorns the church in the village center as well as the walls of the Angelika Kauffmann Museum.

No. 13 - Eduard Mörike

In 1857, poet Eduard Mörike spent a delayed honeymoon with his wife Margarethe von Speeth here at the Hirschen. Room No. 13, which is dedicated to him, contains reminiscences of the Hirschen as it was back in those days as well as sketches by Mörike himself. Eduard Mörike’s personal entry in the guestbook: "And so, on 2nd July, we came through the broad valley with its dark forests to the top of the high mountains, and to Schwarzenberg which pressed against the mountainside. We are now deep within the forest, as if cut off from every sound of the noisy outside world. It is wonderful."

No. 14 - Thresle Metzler

The aunt of owner Franz Fetz was well known as a créatrice amongst the folk-costume artists and embroiderers of Bregenzerwald. In the 1950s, her craftsmanship propelled the Bregenzerwald Juppe to the heights of fashion.

No. 31 - Rudolf Hradil

Born in Salzburg in 1925, Rudolf Hradil is one of Austria’s most significant painters. His career took him from his early days as a sketch artist to membership in the Vienna Secession and ultimately the Golden Medal of Honor awarded by Salzburg Province.

Photographer, graphic artist and painter Rudolf Zündel, who passed away in 2018, was a founding member of the "Bregenz Circle" and for many years a prominent figure in the Vorarlberg art and cultural scene. Dedicated to him, room No. 34 shows his unique works combining his 3 passions, painting, graphic art and photography.

Carl Kunst († 1912) was a German artist, illustrator and graphic artist. During his short period of creativity, Carl Kunst designed numerous posters, advertising motifs and illustrated books.

A Dornbirn native and adopted Schwarzenberger, Harry Metzler gave this picture to Franz Fetz on his birthday in 1977. After roaming the world and studying in Vienna, California and Tokyo, Metzler returned to Vorarlberg in 1979, since when he has lived in Schwarzenberg.

In room No. 41, you will see two works by Aldo Mondino depicting American poet Ezra Pound. On the second painting, Aldo Mondino (1938 to 2005) portrays Ezra Pound in oil on linoleum. The title “Brunnenburg” references the medieval castle in Dorf Tirol above Merano.

Art by Bregenzerwald native and self-taught Rita Moosbrugger decorates this room. Today, she lives and works in Bregenz. Though she also has a studio in Schwarzenberg (open to visitors by appointment).

No. 43 - Heinz Greissing

Born in Vienna in 1933, Heinz Greissing adopted Ronda as his home. He is famous for his striped paintings. The Alptag, which is traditionally held in mid-September, is the theme of the middle of the three pictures in room 43. The two other pencil sketches were also created close to the Hirschen, on the Klausberg and in the Bödele.

No. 44 - Paul Renner

Paul Renner has many ties to Gasthof Hirschen, not least due to his legendary parties which he persuaded Franz Fetz to host. The seminar room for small meetings in the winter garden of the Wälderhaus is also named after Paul Renner, where our 1991 Artist in Residence immortalized the famous couch-potato Oblomov.

Edith Rinner works in the attic of a former farmhouse not far from the Hirschen. It was there, in Egg in Bregenzerwald, that Edith Rinner was born in 1951. Through her pictures, she has the opportunity to relate to the world around her, be that people or nature. “With eyes and all my senses wide open, I strive to open my inner eye.”

The surreal composition in room No. 49 entitled “Metamorphosis” is reminiscent of Salvador Dalí. This oil painting from 1970 was the first work sold by the then 20-year-old Helmut King. The Vorarlberg painter and graphic artist also made a name for himself as a packaging artist. Containers, footbridges and lift stations have all been clad in his colorful depictions.

Franz Schnell, born in 1972, worked as a chef at acclaimed establishments such as this one. For half a year in 2003, he was kitchen manager at Paul Renner’s “Hell Fire Dining Club”, a restaurant for Kunsthalle Wien that was conceived as a complete work of art. “This experience was like an explosion, propelling me into the art world.” This is how the Bregenzerwald native describes his path from cook to artist. Franz Schnell calls his pictures in art room No. 51 “punk art”. Which he understands to be a countermovement to popular Pop Art.

The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Prince and many other greats in the history of music - Franz Fetz pulled his favorite album covers from the attic and rearranged them especially for room 55. Studio 55 is a homage to the legendary “Studio 54” in New York. Founded in 1977, it became one of the world’s most famous nightclubs.

This native of Schwarzenberg, whose studio is in Dornbirn, has been focused on painting since she was a young girl. 20 years ago in Bregenzerwald, she created her first portraits of women wearing the traditional Juppe. Sporting the unique folk costume of the Bregenzerwald - the Juppô (Juppe) – these strong women stand for the lifestyle and traditions of this region.
