Village Structure & Listed Monument
Schwarzenberg in Vorarlberg
The historically listed town center of Schwarzenberg in Vorarlberg is one of the most beautiful in the entire province. The village owes its architectural coherence to a calamitous incident which, centuries later, actually turned out to be a stroke of good fortune! In the year 1755, a big conflagration consumed much of Schwarzenberg. The flames devastated the church, while the high temperatures even managed to melt the church bells. But before the ashes had even had a chance to cool, the locals were already busy planning how to rebuild their village: Like a phoenix from the ashes, the village rose from the ruins and was rebuilt, bigger and more beautiful than before. The new Hotel Hirschen was likewise built in 1755, since which time it has gazed upon the goings-on on the village square.
The Baroque church, the Dance House and 16 other buildings – Hotel Hirschen included – were placed under a preservation order in 1989. The historic ensemble of buildings dating back to the 18th century is unlike anything you will encounter elsewhere in Austria. Travelers and recreation seekers enjoy the rural charm and character of the village. In Schwarzenberg in Bregenzerwald, you can quench your yearning for down-to-earth authenticity. That said, Schwarzenberg also greets you with a surprising urban touch. Innovative ideas make this village a place with a robust future, a place that is not as quiet as it may seem at first glance. The village of Schwarzenberg in Vorarlberg stands for diversity and creativity, for a sense of community, something that occasionally gets lost in the shuffle of the bigger cities.
